Hot Rock ‘N’ Roll Barbershop Hits The Heights

HOUSTON CULTUREMAP

The eagerly anticipated development Heights Waterworks has raised its cool quotient even higher, with the announcement that popular grooming spot Floyd’s 99 Barbershop will be a future tenant.

It’s a synergistic move, given that The Heights is synonymous with live music, and Floyd’s 99 bills itself as a “rock ‘n’ roll” barbershop. (Each location features a signature rock ‘n’ roll poster wall and music memorabilia, which showcases relevant artists from each region.) “The Heights was a no-brainer,” says Lauren Heimann of Edge Realty, who helped secure the site. “The owners looked at the activity on White Oak, Shepherd, and Studewood and were excited. And the fact that Hopdoddy will also be in Heights Waterworks was definitely of interest to Floyd’s.”

“Barbershops are a hot new trend in retail, but Floyd’s 99 Barbershop has been doing this since 2001,” Zachary Wolf, of Braun Enterprises, tells CultureMap. “We always look to elevate the retail experience, and pick the right partners to help us create that vision. We met personally with the owners, the O’Brien brothers, and couldn’t have been more impressed by a family-owned business like Floyd’s 99 Barbershop.” Wolf says Floyd’s 99 should open in the fourth quarter of 2018.

The national chain — which boasts more than 100 locations across the country, including Austin and Dallas — is popular for its classic straight-razor neck shave with hot lather and steamed towels, and for a complimentary shoulder massage after the hair service.

Unlike many men-centric barber shops, Floyd’s 99 offers services for women, including cuts, color services, deep conditioning treatments, styling, and facial waxing. There’s also an exclusive grooming line, which includes shampoos, conditioners, style creams, and beard products.

“You’re getting the quality of an appointment-only salon, with the convenience of a walk-in barber shop, at an approachable price point,” says Rachel Vaughn of Floyd’s 99.

The owners hope to fill a need, and inspire some healthy Lone Star State competition with the Heights Waterworks location. “Texas is in need of a barbershop like ours,” says Vaughn. “Our Dallas location is one of our most successful, so we’d love to see that kind of success in Houston.”
