Rumor No More: Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken Opens Houston Location (Update)

HOUSTON BUSINESS JOURNAL

Update: Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken officially opened its Houston location May 7 after holding soft opening hours over the weekend, according to Eater Houston. The company's website lists store hours for the Houston location — at 1815 Washington Ave. — as 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

The original story from May 3 appears below.

It’s official: Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken is coming to Houston.

The chicken chain, known for its hot-and-spicy fried chicken, has the Bayou City listed as a future location on its website. Both the Houston Chronicle and PaperCity Magazine report that the store will open at 1815 Washington Ave., across from B&B Butchers, this May.

Houston-based Braun Enterprises owns the property at that site, per the developer's website. Braun renovated the 4,000-square-foot building with a 600-square foot-patio.

Rumors that the Tennessee-based chain would come to Houston have been circling for a few years. Houston owner-franchisee Brad Blodgett opened a Gus’s in Austin in 2014 and said he wanted to bring the restaurant to Space City. The chain also has a location in Fort Worth.

Originally, Blodgett planned to open a Gus’s last spring, but permitting and construction issues stalled progress, PaperCity reported.

Well over 60 years ago, the chain started in Mason, Tennessee, and was served from the backdoor of a tavern. Since then, Gus’s has expanded across the U.S. with more than 20 locations in 12 states including Missouri, Mississippi, Georgia, Arkansas and even as far north as Chicago and Detroit.
